DCDSB - Air Quality in Durham Region

Posted On Wednesday June 07, 2023

Dear Parents, Guardians and Caregivers:

The safety of students and staff is a top priority for the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB).

Environment Canada has issued a Special Air Quality statement for the Durham Region as smoke plumes from forest fires in Quebec and northeastern Ontario may result in deteriorated air quality throughout the week. Current Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) values are moderate to high, indicating no need to change usual outdoor activities, however, where possible, strenuous outdoor activities should be reduced.

If you have particular health related questions, please contact your healthcare provider.

Recess and lunch hour activities can proceed as normal, however, students and staff with health conditions that can be exacerbated by wildfire smoke may need to remain indoors. Additionally, school ventilation will be adjusted as required, portable HEPA units will continue to be used throughout the schools, and where safe to do so, windows may be closed.

The DCDSB will continue to work with the Region of Durham to monitor the air quality and introduce additional safety measures where needed. For more information on outdoor air quality, please visit the Region of Durham website.

For tips and more information on how to protect yourself from wildfire smoke, please visit the Government of Canada website.

School staff have been made aware and will continue monitor activities accordingly. If you have any questions, please contact your school.

Best,
Durham Catholic District School Board
